One of the most important Brazilian artists of the contemporary era, Geraldo de Barros was a pioneer of the Brazilian artistic avant-garde of the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. The multidisciplinary nature of his research contributed to positioning Brazilian art among the most powerful in the world, breaking paradigms within art styles and genres, in regard to forms, materials, and supports, as well as through his constant questioning of the notion of the reproducibility of the artwork.
His investigation into this question of the artwork’s reproducibility led Geraldo de Barros to study possibilities for works that were more easily produced, making them more assessable. To this end, in the 1980s the artist created a series of works in Formica to be manufactured by the furniture factory he founded, by the name of Hobjeto. Both the furniture and the artworks in Formica were made using the same techniques.
