Iván Navarro Chilean, b. 1972

1972. Santiago, Chile. Lives and works in New York, USA.

Iván Navarro's production is based on the interaction between two main axes: the history of art and the history of politics. On the one hand, from a formalist point of view, his works are carefully constructed and establish a direct dialogue with Minimalism, especially through the use of light as its main support. In direct contrast to modernist principles, however, Navarro's production is imbued with strongly political connotations, which are communicated to the public by numerous strategies, as seen in the titles of his works (e.g., his famous "Electric Chairs" series), careful use of color or in the appropriation and deconstruction of symbols representing ideologies and institutionalized power.
