Afonso Tostes’s artistic research is guided by concepts related to matter and three-dimensionality. Wood plays a significant role in his work, both for its symbolic meaning and its formal characteristics. Known for his large-scale installations, Afonso Tostes recovers the underlying histories of materials, exposes them, and transforms their narratives and contexts.
In 2023, Luciana Brito Galeria hosted the exhibition Ajuntamentos, where the artist presented a group of new works, including the Reforma series. The works in this series were produced from sawdust collected while sanding the wooden sculptures that were also part of the exhibition. The various colors in this series, derived from various kinds of woods of different shades, form geometric structures that follow the same poetic approach found in the sculptures. This was the first time the artist had used this procedure. As a continuation of the Ajuntamentos project, Afonso Tostes also held an exhibition at Fundação Iberê Camargo, in Porto Alegre in 2023.
