The work Arapehy was created in a secluded part of the Saco do Mamanguá Reserve, an inlet along the seashore in Paraty, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This reserve is crucial for conserving the forest and supporting the natural spawning and nursery grounds of local fish species. The artist coined the title Arapehy to refer to a legend about the communion between plants and the flow of the river. In the story, Arapehy is a special tree that plays a key role in protecting the area’s biodiversity. Its roots extend so deep they reach the very heart of the earth, protecting it. The legend tells how, after a long drought, and after all hope for the forest was lost, the tree Arapehy summoned the waters that saved the region, thereby earning the gratitude and respect of all the beings that lived there.
