Waldemar Cordeiro

The paintings from this phase are marked by a search for balance among the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and the structuring of forms. It was during this time that Waldemar Cordeiro began using abstract figures and overlapping shapes based on the visual principles of Gestalt, in contrast to the spatial conventions of the Renaissance School. That is, he introduced depth and movement without resorting to perspective illusion or narrative elements. This body of work already anticipated the ideas that would shape Grupo Ruptura (1952), which advocated for a new art grounded in clarity, objectivity, and rational principles, while rejecting all forms of naturalism.

As pinturas dessa fase são caracterizadas pela busca do equilíbrio entre as cores primárias (vermelho, azul, amarelo) e a estruturação das formas. É nesse período que Waldemar Cordeiro começa a utilizar figuras abstratas e sobreposição de formas seguindo as leis visuais da Gestalt, em detrimento dos princípios espaciais da Escola do Renascimento. Ou seja, ele atribui profundidade e movimento sem recorrer a qualquer tipo de ilusão de perspectiva ou elementos narrativos. A produção desse período já prenunciava as ideias do Grupo Ruptura (1952), que primava por uma nova arte baseada em princípios claros, objetivos e racionais, rejeitando qualquer tipo de naturalismo.
