A pesquisa artística de Regina Silveira questiona as formas ortodoxas e pré-estabelecidas de representação, levando-a a trabalhar novas possibilidades de significações. Suas obras exploram o espaço arquitetônico e contextual, geralmente causando estranhamento, por meio do deslocamento do comum, ou seja, das nossas referências comuns. Regina Silveira é conhecida por sua pesquisa sobre os princípios da perspectiva, tridimensionalidade e estudo das sombras, dos quais emprega em grandes instalações site specifics, recortes em vinil, projeções luminosas, gravuras, bordados, porcelana, vídeos digitais, etc.

 

Bacharel em Artes pelo Instituto de Artes do Rio Grande do Sul (1959), Mestre (1980) e Doutora em Arte (1984) pela Escola de Comunicações e Artes da Universidade de São Paulo, sua carreira como docente inclui o ensino no Instituto de Artes do Rio Grande do Sul; na Universidade de Puerto Rico, em Mayaguez; na FAAP, São Paulo; e na ECA-USP. Foi artista convidada da Bienal de Arte Contemporânea de Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal, em 2024,  Bienal de São Paulo nas edições de 1981, 1983, 1998 e 2021, da Bienal Internacional de Curitiba em 2013 e 2015, e da Bienal do Mercosul em 2001 e 2011. Participou da Bienal de La Habana, Cuba, em 1986, 1998 e 2015; Médiations Biennale, Poznan, Polônia, em 2012; 6^a Taipei Biennial, Taiwan, em 2006; e 2^a Setouchi Triennale, Japão, em 2016. Mais recentemente, em 2025, a artista inaugurou sua maior obra comissionada, Paradise, no IAH Terminal D - George Bush Intercontinental Airport, em Houston, EUA, além de de mostras individuais no Instituto Arte Contemporânea (USP), em São Paulo, e no La Virreina Centre de La Imatge, Barcelona, Espanha. Em 2021-22, Regina Silveira apresentou uma grande retrospectiva no Museu de Arte Contemporânea – MAC-USP, em São Paulo. Além disso, a artista já teve seu trabalho apresentado no La Virreina Centre de La Imatge, Barcelona, Espanha, 2024; Paço das Artes, São Paulo, 2020; Museu Brasileiro da Escultura – MuBE, São Paulo, Brasil, 2018; Museu Oscar Niemeyer, Curitiba, Brasil, 2015; Museo Amparo, Puebla, México, 2014; Fundação Iberê Camargo, Porto Alegre Brasil, 2011; Atlas Sztuki Gallery, Lodz, Polônia, 2010; MASP-SP, 2010; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madri, 2005. Regina Silveira recebeu o Prêmio MASP (2013), o Prêmio APCA pela carreira (2011) e o Prêmio Fundação Bunge (2009). Foi bolsista das fundações Fulbright (1994), Pollock-Krasner (1993) e Guggenheim (1990) e sua obra está representada em inúmeras coleções públicas e privadas, como Cisneros-Fontanals Art Foundation (EUA), Inhotim (Brasil), Coleção Itaú (Brasil), El Museo del Barrio (EUA), MAC-USP (Brasil), MASP (Brasil), MAM-RJ/SP (Brasil), Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo (Brasil), MoMA (EUA), Phoenix Museum (EUA).

 

 

Regina Silveira’s artistic research questions the orthodox, preestablished forms of representation, leading her to work with new possibilities of signification. Her works explore the architectural and contextual space, generally evoking a sense of uncanniness through the displacement of the commonplace, that is, our common references. Regina Silveira is known for her research into the principles of perspective, tridimensionality, and the study of shadows, which she employs in large site-specific installations, vinyl cutouts, luminous projections, works in printmaking, embroidery, porcelain, digital videos, etc.

 

With a BA in arts from the Instituto de Artes do Rio Grande do Sul (1959), an MA (1980) and PhD in art (1984) from the School of Communication and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA USP), her career as a professor includes stints of teaching at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez; at FAAP, São Paulo; and at ECA USP. She was an invited artist at the 1981, 1983, 1998 and 2021 editions of the Bienal de São Paulo, the 2013 and 2015 editions of the Bienal Internacional de Curitiba, and the 2001 and 2011 editions of the Bienal do Mercosul. She participated in the Bienal de La Habana, Cuba, in 1986, 1998 and 2015; Mediations Biennale, Poznan, Poland, in 2012; the 6th Taipei Biennial, Taiwan, in 2006; and the 2nd Setouchi Triennale, Japan, in 2016. Most recently, in 2025, the artist presented her largest commissioned work ever held, Paradise, at IAH Terminal D - George Bush Intercontinental Airport, in Houston, USA, as well as solo exhibitions at the Instituto Arte Contemporânea (USP), in São Paulo, and at La Virreina Centre de La Imatge, Barcelona, ​​Spain. The artist’s work also has been presented in a major retrospective at Museu de Arte Contemporânea – MAC-USP, 2021-22, as well as at La Virreina Centre de La Imatge, Barcelona, Espanha, 2024; Paço das Artes, São Paulo, 2020; the Museu Brasileiro da Escultura (MuBE), São Paulo, 2018; the Museu Oscar Niemeyer, Curitiba, 2015; the Museo Amparo, Puebla, Mexico, 2014; the Fundação Iberê Camargo, Porto Alegre, 2011; Atlas Sztuki Gallery, Lodz, Poland, 2010; Masp, 2010; and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain, 2005. Regina Silveira was awarded the Prêmio Masp (2013), the Prêmio APCA for her career (2011), and the Prêmio Fundação Bunge (2009). She has received grants from the Fulbright (1994), Pollock-Krasner (1993) and Guggenheim (1990) foundations, and her work figures in countless public and private collections, such as those of the Cisneros-Fontanals Art Foundation (USA), Inhotim, Coleção Itaú, El Museo del Barrio (USA), MAC-USP, Masp, MAM-RJ/SP, the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, MoMA (USA), and the Phoenix Museum (USA).
