Fernando Zarif é considerado uma das figuras mais emblemáticas da geração paulistana dos anos 80, autor de uma vasta produção, onde estabeleceu uma linguagem autêntica e independente. A partir da década 1990, passou a trabalhar a apropriação de objetos, mantendo ou não a integridade desse material. Por meio dessa série de pequenos retratos, o artista conseguia expor sua forma frenética de produção, onde o criar estava associado a uma experiência simbiótica com o produzir. Aqui, Zarif utilizava a bisnaga de tinta diretamente na tela, associando pequenos objetos de formatos que favoreciam a composição.

Em 1982, Zarif realizou sua primeira individual na Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. Em 1983, apresentou performances musicais no MASP. Em 1995, realizou exposição individual no MAM-RJ. Em 1998, apresentou mostra individual na Maison des Arts André Malraux, em Créteil, França (1998). Em 2009, participou de sua última exposição em vida, no Espaço Tom Jobim (RJ). Em 2011, a família criou o Projeto Fernando Zarif, para preservar, catalogar e difundir a obra do artista. Em 2015, deu-se a primeira exposição póstuma do artista no Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz, seguida por mostra realizada pela Luciana Brito Galeria.

Fernando Zarif is considered one of the most emblematic figures of the ‘80s generation of São Paulo artists, the author of a vast production, in which he has established an authentic and independent language. From 1990 onward, he began to work with the appropriation of objects, sometimes keeping them whole, sometimes not. Through that series of small portraits, the artist managed to express his frenetic form of production, where creation was associated to a symbiotic experience with the act of producing. In these works, Zarif squeezed paint directly from the tube onto the canvas, sometimes associating small objects that favor the composition.

In 1982, Zarif held his first solo show at the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. In 1983, he presented musical performances at MASP. In 1995, he held a solo show at MAM-RJ. In 1998, he presented a solo show at Maison des Arts André Malraux, in Créteil, France (1998). In 2009, he participated in his last exhibition in life, at Espaço Tom Jobim (RJ). In 2011, his family created the Projeto Fernando Zarif, an institution with the aim of preserving, cataloging and raising awareness about the artist’s oeuvre. In 2015, the first posthumous exhibition of the artist was held at Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz, followed by a show produced by Luciana Brito Galeria.
